How to Get in the Right Mindset

Before thinking about logistics, Meredith believes there’s one thing every mom-to-be deserves to hear.

“That they deserve to be celebrated in this season! Pregnancy (and even getting pregnant) can be so hard, scary, AND so beautiful. No matter how you are feeling, this is an exciting moment for you and your growing family!”

When thinking about how to prep for a maternity photoshoot, start by giving yourself permission to show up exactly as you are. You don’t need to feel glowing or polished to deserve photos that reflect this chapter of your life. This session is about honoring your experience, whatever it looks like.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot

One of the most common questions when learning how to prep for a maternity photoshoot is what to wear. The good news is that maternity fashion has expanded far beyond one standard look.

“Maternity fashion has come a long way!” Meredith adds, “There is so much fun variety nowadays, and you can really let your personality shine. From flowing maxi or tight bump-hugging dresses, to bare bellies and jeans – whatever helps you feel beautiful!”

The best outfit is the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Whether that means something soft and flowing or an outfit that shows off your bump, trust your instincts. When you feel good, it shows in your photos.

How to Choose the Right Location

Location plays a big role in the overall feel of your session. Meredith has a clear favorite when it comes to maternity photography.

“I love documenting maternity sessions in nature because it helps time-stamp your pregnancy. Flowers blooming in the spring, snow in the winter, beach in the summer, foliage in autumn!”

Nature offers a natural backdrop that reflects the season you are in, both literally and figuratively. Meredith also suggests thinking beyond convenience.

“If this is your first baby, you can also use this session as an excuse to go somewhere a little adventurous or a little out of town! At home is also a great way to document this season of anticipation.”

When deciding how to prep for a maternity photoshoot, consider what environment feels most like you. A favorite park, a meaningful beach, or the comfort of your home can all tell a different version of your story.

Whether to Include Children or Family Members

If you are including older children or other family members, a little preparation goes a long way.

Meredith says, “You can talk up the experience to your older little(s) by saying how special these photos will be to have before their new sibling is born! Referring to your photographer as ‘your friend’ coming to take some pictures of our family is helpful!”

Setting expectations in a positive, age-appropriate way helps everyone feel more relaxed and involved during the session.

When to Schedule and Book Your Session

Timing is a key part of how to prep for a maternity photoshoot. Meredith recommends planning your session during a specific window.

“I recommend taking maternity photos around 32-34 weeks pregnant. This way, you’ve got a bump going.” At the same time, you’re probably still pretty mobile and not too close to possible early labor.

Booking early is equally important. Meredith suggests planning ahead.

“Ideally, book during your second trimester, especially if your preferred photographer has limited availability. This gives you both plenty of time to plan, choose outfits, and find the perfect location.”

Props and Personal Touches

When it comes to props, Meredith encourages moms to do what feels right for them.

“Props are totally optional. Some moms love bringing baby shoes, ultrasound photos, or letterboards with baby’s name or due date. Others prefer to keep things simple and let the bump be the star. You do you!”

There is no right or wrong approach. The goal is for the session to reflect your personality and preferences.

What to Do with Your Photos Afterward

Finally, Meredith hopes families take their photos beyond the digital screen.

“Print them in an album, or print them to hang in your baby's room, or even your room to remember this special time!”
